Why Try Clay Pigeon Shooting?

Even if you’ve never held a gun before, clay pigeon shooting is an activity you can absolutely enjoy. We understand that some people feel unsure or even a little nervous—but that’s where our one-on-one instruction comes in. Each group of 1–6 shooters is assigned a dedicated instructor who’ll guide you through every step, helping you feel relaxed, safe, and confident.

Our fully licensed outdoor activity centre offers:

  • A scenic North Somerset setting just outside Portishead
  • Five varied shooting stands designed to test and entertain
  • One-on-one coaching with no mixed groups, so you can enjoy private time with your friends or family
  • Safety equipment, in-depth briefings, and top-tier 12- and 20-bore competition-standard guns
  • Packages with 30, 40 or 50 clays—with individual scorecards and medals for top shooters

Our targets are launched from automatic traps and fly at a variety of heights and angles, keeping things fun and challenging. Clays typically stop around 40 feet in front of you—close enough to see your hits, but far enough to require some sharp shooting.

Practice Shoot Days: Hone Your Skills

For experienced shooters with their own gun and licence, Weston Lodge Shooting Ground offers dedicated practice shoot days. These sessions provide the perfect opportunity to refine your aim and enjoy our challenging woodland layout.

Held once a fortnight on a Saturday morning, our practice shoots kick off at 10:00hrs. You’ll have access to 7 different shooting stands, strategically placed throughout our scenic woodland. All stands are covered, and you’ll find 15 automatic traps ready to launch clays at a variety of angles and speeds – with the layout regularly changed to keep things fresh and engaging.

Please note that shooters will need to use our cartridges: Hull Competition X – 7.1/2 fibre.

The inclusive cost for a 50 clay shoot is:

  • 21 grams: £31
  • 28 grams: £33

And to keep you refreshed, complimentary tea and coffee are included! Come and enjoy a relaxed yet challenging morning of clay pigeon shooting, surrounded by beautiful Somerset countryside.

FAQs – Everything You Need to Know Before Your Clay Shoot

Dress for the weather; layers are ideal. Wear sturdy footwear and avoid bulky jackets or baggy clothes, as these can affect your shooting stance. A hat to help block out any glare from the sun is also a good shout. We’ll provide eye and ear protection, which you’ll need to wear at all times.

It starts with identifying your dominant eye, planting your feet, and firmly mounting the gun to your shoulder. As the clay is launched, follow its flight smoothly and shoot just as it’s rising to allow for lead time. Our instructors will walk you through techniques for each target type—whether it’s a rolling rabbit or a soaring teal.

The minimum age is 13, and anyone under 16 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. We love hosting group shooting days for families with older teens who visit us from all across the UK, not just Bristol, Bath, Cardiff, Taunton, and Gloucester.

From solo shooters to parties of up to 40, we’ve got the space and staff to tailor your clay shooting session. Groups of 5–6 are assigned a personal instructor, and no groups are ever mixed.

All shooting takes place in our private woodland clay layout, across five themed stands. Your group will stay together throughout, enjoying uninterrupted shooting time with no queues—even on busy days.

Every booking includes:

  • One-on-one instruction with a dedicated instructor
  • Use of our 12-bore or 20-bore competition-standard shotguns
  • All safety equipment—eye and ear protection
  • A full safety and technique briefing
  • All clays and cartridges
  • Personalised scorecards
  • Gold, silver, and bronze medals for top scorers
